Ugadi is the New Year festival celebrated by Telugu and Kannada communities, mainly in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.
The name comes from the Sanskrit words “Yuga” (age) and “Adi” (beginning), meaning the beginning of a new age. It marks the first day of the Chaitra month in the traditional Hindu lunisolar calendar.
Gudi Padwa is the New Year festival of the Marathi and Konkani people, celebrated mainly in Maharashtra and Goa.
Like Ugadi, it falls on the first day of the Chaitra month and marks the start of the Hindu New Year according to the lunisolar calendar.
